Soccer: Coal Ridge rolls past Aspen
The Aspen Times
The Titans packed their offense when they traveled to Aspen on Thursday.
The Coal Ridge High School boys soccer team, with a three-goal outburst in the first half, finished with a 5-0 victory over the Skiers in a Western Slope League match at Aspen School District Stadium.
The victory boosted the playoff aspirations of the Titans, who are near the top of the conference standings with a 5-1-1 league record. Coal Ridge is 8-5-1 overall.
Ray Bencomo scored the first of his two goals just 4:25 into the match after taking a delicate pass in front of the goal from Sergio Valentin — remember that name.
Valentin scored Coal Ridge’s second goal with 12 minutes to play in the opening half, collecting a bouncing ball and ripping a left-footed shot into the Aspen goal.
Bencomo’s goal right before halftime, assisted by Josh Fulk, produced the 3-0 lead.
Miguel Navarro and Carlos Ponce scored for the Titans in the second half.
Coal Ridge offered 14 shots to 10 for the Skiers, who slipped to 5-7-1 overall, 3-4-0 in the Western Slope League.
Aspen had an early scoring opportunity on a pair of shots from Guillermo Flores.
The Skiers’ best scoring chance came early in the second half when a wicked shot from Nikko Wehse banged into the right post at the crossbar and bounced away.
Ponce’s shot for the Titans would have a different fate, ricocheting off the left post and into the back of the Aspen net for the final goal of the match.
Coal Ridge will play its final game of the regular season Tuesday at New Castle when Roaring Fork visits.
Aspen, with three consecutive wins before Thursday’s loss to the Titans, will play at Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale on Saturday. The Skiers will host Palisade in a nonconference match next Tuesday to close the regular season.
