Snow delays state prep softball championships
Snow in the greater Denver area on Friday forced the postponement of the CHSAA State High School Softball Championships.
The state championships in all school classifications were scheduled to begin Friday morning at Aurora Sports Park in Aurora.
However, CHSAA officials early Friday scrapped the day’s schedule and moved the tournament to today and Sunday.
“The Aurora Sports Park deemed the fields unplayable for Friday,” said CHSAA Assistant Commissioner Bert Borgmann. “As such, the entire tournament will be pushed back one day.”
The delay means the Basalt Longhorns, a Class 3A team of players from Basalt, Roaring Fork and Glenwood Springs high schools, will start their quest for a state title at 12:15 p.m. today against La Junta. Basalt (16-5) is the No. 9 seed in the 12-team state field. La Junta (13-7) is seeded No. 8.
The winner of the Basalt-La Junta game will play overall No. 1 seed, undefeated Strasburg (21-0), in the second round at 2:30 p.m. today at the Aurora Sports Park.
The Longhorns qualified for state for the second consecutive year after finishing second to No. 4 seed Valley (14-7) in last weekend’s Class 3A Regional Championships at Basalt.
The Longhorns, behind the pitching of Brittany Driscoll, defeated Faith Christian in the first game at the regional tournament to earn the trip to state.
