The Aspen Cycling Club will put a new twist on an old favorite today.

The annual Smuggler Hunter Creek Mountain Bike Race will feature a new course this year.

The weekly club bike races will start at 6 p.m. today at the base of Smuggler Mountain Road.

“We are excited to try a new course this year that incorporates BTS, Tootsie Roll and Lollipop,” Aspen Cycling Club president Mike Maple said. “Lots of great singletrack climbing, tight switchbacks and challenging downhill.”

Today’s race will be followed by a party at 7:15 p.m., hosted by sponsor 520 Grill.

All cyclists are invited. Registration for members and nonmembers will open at 5 p.m. and close at 5:50 p.m. at the start.

Maple said the mountain bikers will head up Smuggler Mountain Road.

“ At the top of Smuggler, near the observation deck, riders will continue straight onto the Behind the Sign Trail (BTS),” Maple said. “Continue on BTS trail staying left at all the intersections.

“Take a left on Smuggler Mountain Road, continue through the wooden gate and then a right on the southern portion of Tootsie Roll and ascend,” he said.

At the top of Tootsie Roll, the course takes a left for a very short descent down Smuggler Mountain Road and then a quick right back onto Tootie Roll where the descent continues.

”At the bottom of Tootsie Roll, take a right onto Lollipop and traverse. Take a left at the Lollipop cutoff and descend,” he said.

Then, at the bottom of the Lollipop cutoff, take a right at the Hunter Creek Cutoff and descend.

At the capped mine area, cyclists will go right on the Iowa Shaft Trail and descend.

After descending to the valley floor, cyclists will take a right on the doubletrack and then a left before crossing the bridge onto the Hunter Creek singletrack.

Go right onto the 10th Mountain Division bridge. Once over the bridge, cyclists will continue straight onto a short trail to the Four Corners Road, where they will go left to the finish for masters, sport and women’s categories.

All Senior Men A and Vet Men A racers will continue up Four Corners Road and then go right on the Lower Plunge.

There is a repeat of the second loop for these riders.

Several marshals are needed for today’s race, including a sweep marshal to ride the course after everyone has headed out.
