Slideshow to aid injured climber tonight at CRMS

Glenwood Springs resident Kurt Birkenmeier suffered serious head injuries in a climbing accident at Red Rocks on May 7. In the fall, Birkenmeier fractured his skull, lost his hearing in one ear and his sense of taste and smell. He spent five days in intensive care.Tonight, at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School barn in Carbondale, the climbing community is getting together for a fund-raising event to help cover Birkenmeier’s mounting medical expenses.The world-renowned husband and wife climbing duo of Tommy Caldwell and Beth Rodden will be presenting a slideshow, and thousands of dollars in gear and equipment will be doled out in a raffle and silent auction. Birkenmeier will also be on hand.Doors open at 7 p.m. and the slideshow is slated to begin at 8 p.m. Organizers are asking for a $10 donation at the door; raffle tickets are $5.The party will shift to the Black Nugget on Main Street in Carbondale following the slideshow, with Coyote Gospel headlining the after-hours affair. Admission to the Nugget costs $5.
