The top high school alpine ski racers in Colorado will descend on Aspen Highlands today for the annual Aspen Invitational.

The prep ski meet, featuring boys and girls teams from the statewide ski league, will start at 10 a.m. today on the Red Onion run at Highlands.

A large turnout is expected among the state’s high schools that field alpine teams under the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) umbrella.

In addition to Aspen, schools that have alpine ski racers include Battle Mountain (Vail), Clear Creek, Colorado Rocky Mountain School (Carbondale), Eagle Valley, Evergreen, Lake County (Leadville), Middle Park (Granby), Nederland, Platte Canyon, Ridge View Academy (Watkins), Steamboat Springs, Summit and Vail Mountain School.

The teams will gather at Ski Cooper near Leadville for the final regular-season giant slalom of the season on Feb. 12.

The state skiing championships will be held Feb. 19-20 in Summit County. The alpine races will be at Keystone. The cross country races will be at the Frisco Nordic Center.

The Aspen Skiers are the reigning boys state ski champions in Colorado.

The AHS girl were state runner-up last year.

The Aspen boys have won seven state ski titles.

The AHS girls have won six state championships, the last one coming in 2012.

Summit leads both categories with 20 girls state titles and 18 boys state championships.
