Skiers to host prep ski races today at Highlands

The top high school alpine ski racers in Colorado will descend on Aspen Highlands today for the annual Aspen Invitational.
The prep ski meet, featuring boys and girls teams from the statewide ski league, will start at 10 a.m. today on the Red Onion run at Highlands.
A large turnout is expected among the state’s high schools that field alpine teams under the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) umbrella.
In addition to Aspen, schools that have alpine ski racers include Battle Mountain (Vail), Clear Creek, Colorado Rocky Mountain School (Carbondale), Eagle Valley, Evergreen, Lake County (Leadville), Middle Park (Granby), Nederland, Platte Canyon, Ridge View Academy (Watkins), Steamboat Springs, Summit and Vail Mountain School.
The teams will gather at Ski Cooper near Leadville for the final regular-season giant slalom of the season on Feb. 12.
The state skiing championships will be held Feb. 19-20 in Summit County. The alpine races will be at Keystone. The cross country races will be at the Frisco Nordic Center.
The Aspen Skiers are the reigning boys state ski champions in Colorado.
The AHS girl were state runner-up last year.
The Aspen boys have won seven state ski titles.
The AHS girls have won six state championships, the last one coming in 2012.
Summit leads both categories with 20 girls state titles and 18 boys state championships.
Area prep basketball teams will hit the road this weekend.
The Aspen High School boys team (2-5 in conference, 6-6 overall) will play at Gunnison (3-4, 4-8 overall) tonight and at Olathe (0-8, 0-13) on Saturday.
The Basalt boys, who won their first conference game last weekend with a 62-30 victory over Olathe, will play a nonleague game at West Grand tonight.
West Grand is 8-6 overall. The Longhorns will host Western Slope League-leading Moffat County (8-0 and 10-3 overall) on Saturday afternoon at the Big House in Basalt.
Area girls teams will match the boys schedules this weekend.
The Aspen girls (1-6 in league, 1-11 overall) will play at Gunnison (2-5, 2-10) tonight. The Skiers will play at league-leading Olathe (8-0, 12-1) on Saturday afternoon.
The Basalt girls (1-8, 1-11) will take on West Grand (10-4 overall) today in a nonleague game before hosting Moffat County (7-1, 9-4) on Saturday afternoon.

The third weekend of play begins Thursday and runs through Sunday with the Bantam B, Squirt A and Squirt B divisions. Because of safety protocols, spectators aren’t allowed.
