Aspen, CO ColoradoSTEAMBOAT SPRINGS Who else?Aspen’s boys ski team finished four points behind rival Summit in a slalom Thursday at Steamboat in yet another tight finish between the two most decorated boys programs in the state. At last year’s state championships at Winter Park, Aspen’s boys appeared to have state title No. 8 in the bag before a costly mistake by then-sophomore Wiley Maple in the final slalom. Maple skied outside the final gate and failed to earn any team points, an error that handed Summit the championship victory.Maple didn’t repeat the mistake Thursday, easily winning with a two-run time of 1 minute, 8.02 seconds, while teammate Sam Coffey was second in 1.09.11.In high school skiing, however, two skiers cannot win a team title, and your third-best skier is arguably just as important as your fastest.Summit proved that point with a 3-4-5 finish from Zach Fretz, Fletcher McDonald and Drew Beling that gave the Tigers 171 points to Aspen’s 167. Aspen’s third-fastest finisher was Stephen Buzbee, who came across in 19th (1:16.76). Showing their depth, the Tigers placed 10 skiers in the top 20 and four in the top 10.Middle Park finished five points back of Aspen with a 7-8-9 finish while the host Sailors recorded a 10-12-14 finish to take fourth with 152 points. In the girls race, Aspen finished fourth with 146 points behind Summit (164), Steamboat Springs (157) and Battle Mountain (153).Jenny Hearn was Aspen’s top finisher with a combined time of 1:20.76, good for sixth. She was followed by Christina VanMoorsel in 15th (1:24.18) and Abby Mickey in 17th (1:24.73).Steamboat Springs Jenny Allen took the win on her home course with a time of 1:15.70. Summit’s Alex Guras was second (1:16.43) and Battle Mountain’s Kelly Van Hee was third (1:18.96)Aspen hosts its home invite next Friday with a giant slalom at Aspen Highlands.Aspen’s Nordic team hosts its only home meet next Saturday with a mass-start freestyle at the Aspen Nordic Center.Nate Peterson’s e-mail address is
