Schermerhorn lifts Aspen boys

Led by senior Moss Schermerhorn with a team-high 15 points, the Aspen High boys basketball team downed Cedaredge 42-34 at home Thursday night.

“That was a great win for us,” said Skiers head coach Steve Ketchum. “[Cedaredge] is a young team but they’re always good, and extremely well coached.”

Both teams started off slow, heading into the half tied 15-15.

“It was a defensive slug-fest,” Ketchum said. “We had a typical slow start but we came on strong and got in a good groove in the second half.”

With three minutes left in the game, the Skiers led by only a point, 34-33.

Then Schermerhorn took over, scoring six points in less than two minutes to pull the Skiers ahead for good. Schermerhorn was aided by senior guard Colter VanDomelen, who made some key passes, and senior Aaron Parada, who had six points.

Brandon Baker led Cedaredge with 10 points.

“They showed us a little something here in the second half; they never quit,” Ketchum said. “We’re playing better together, as a team, we’re not playing selfish.”

Ketchum said solid defense kept the Skiers in the game, and he feels good about his team as they head into the Christmas break.

“To have this little experience and be 3-3 and 1-0 in the conference, that’s impressive for this team,” Ketchum said. “I’m very proud of them, they earned some time off.”

Several former Skiers, home on break from college, attended the game. “It was good to give them a show with a win,” Ketchum said.

Aspen will not play again until Jan. 9, a home game against Roaring Fork.
