Roaring Fork Conservancy cancels river float but festival still on

Staff report

The Roaring Fork Conservancy decided to cancel its annual river float on the lower Roaring Fork River on Saturday, but its 11th annual River Festival will be held as planned.

The Basalt-based nonprofit organization announced Wednesday that the float had to be canceled because of safety reasons due to the “extremely high river levels.”

The River Festival will be held at Coryell Ranch, on the Garfield County Road between Colorado Rocky Mountain School and Aspen Glen, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A $20 ticket includes lunch, beer or soft drinks, live music and a bunch of activities. There will be gear demos and stand-up paddleboard demos on ponds, fly-casting games and a raffle for prizes. Participants are urged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Advance tickets are highly recommended so there is enough food and beer for all. Tickets are sold in advance at http://www.roaringfork.org/float.

The float was scheduled to be held Saturday morning prior to the festival. The $20 ticket for the float will be refunded, or it can be donated to the Roaring Fork Conservancy at the registration table at the River Festival.

Longtime Conservancy staff member Sarah Johnson said people have been eager to attend the River Festival despite the cancellation of the float. She said the float was canceled in 2010 because of high water, as well.
