The Aspen High School boys hockey team kicked off 2014 with a big 8-4 win on the road at Valor Christian.

The Skiers, short on players and coming off the holiday break, skated to a 1-1 tie before their offense went on the attack in the nonconference game in Highlands Ranch on Saturday night.

“Our numbers are dwindling, but we played well,” Aspen head coach Al Butler said.

He said the Skiers were missing three injured players and another with illness.

“And we lost another on (Saturday),” Butler said.

He said a number of Skiers converted scoring opportunities, including Jordan Cottrell, Henry Godfrey, Charlie Van Allen, Burke Daily, among others.

“It really was a well-rounded effort. But everyone had to play hard for us to win,” Butler said.

The Aspen boys improved to 3-3-0 overall. They will return home to host rival Battle Mountain (Vail area) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Lewis Ice Arena at the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC).

The Skiers will play at Chatfield (Denver area) and at Liberty in Colorado Springs next weekend.
