A large field of 80 cross country skiers turned out last weekend for the fourth annual Ski for the Pass benefit.

The classic race took the cross country skiers from the winter closure gate to Lincoln Creek, a 7-kilometer ski on freshly groomed snow.

The race was part of the Aspen Cup race series, co-sponsored by the Ute Mountaineer.

Warm temperatures made for critical waxing last weekend.

Nils Koons of Snowmass won the overall title in 2016 in 32 minutes, 26 seconds.

Rachel Bachman of Carbondale was the women’s winner in 40:25.

Koons won the annual Owl Creek Chase cross country ski race from Snowmass to Aspen two weeks ago. Ben Koons finished second overall last weekend.

Rob Russell of Carbondale was third.

The Ski for the Pass is a benefit for the Independence Pass Foundation, which works to protect the ecological, historical and aesthetic integrity of the pass corridor.
