Aspen’s Kristin Walla shot back-to-back course-record scores to enter today’s final round of the Colorado Women’s Golf Association (CWGA) Junior Stroke Play Championship at Eaton Country Club with a three-stroke lead.Walla, a rising Aspen High School senior, shot a 2-under par 70 in Wednesday’s first round, a score matched by her playing partner Ashley Tait of Raccoon Creek Golf Club for the women’s course record. Then yesterday, Walla shot a blazing 69 to raise the bar once more and leave Tait behind.Walla stands at 5-under. Tait shot a 72 Wednesday and is the only other player with a subpar score at 2-under. Dawn Shockley of Estes Park Golf Club stands in third at 3-over.”Today she played really well,” said Kristin’s dad John, “with a 31 on the front nine.”The field includes about 35 of the top junior players in the state. Walla, a three-time Class 4A Western Slope Regional Tournament champion with the AHS team, has also recorded three top-10 results at the 4A state tourney in as many tries. In the 2003 CWGA Junior Stroke Play Championship Walla finished fourth.Walla had never set a course record before, however.”And it’s not like a brand-new course,” said John Walla. “She’s pretty happy with that.”
