Rams rout Longhorns
CARBONDALE – Defense has always played a big role in Roaring Fork’s football success. But that part of the Rams’ game has escaped recognition.Until Friday night.Holding Basalt to minus 10 yards in the second half, Roaring Fork’s defense allowed the Rams’ offense to shine, putting points on the scoreboard.
“I come from the school that defense wins championship,” said Rams head coach Mike Brinson. “[Assistant coach] Jeff Kelley and I put a lot of effort into it, and the kids take pride in our defense.”With the efforts of both the offense and the defense combined, Roaring Fork’s one-point halftime lead climbed to a 27-6 rout. The win maintains the Rams’ (7-1 overall, 5-1 3A Western Slope) second-place tie with Gunnison as the season heads into the final week of the regular season.Roaring Fork scored on a 26-yard run by Trevor Hunt during the first quarter. The 7-0 lead, thanks to Jake Kinney’s extra-point kick, held up when Micah Amborn blocked a Longhorn PAT after Tucker Hinchcliff’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Gawrys with 11 minutes, 53 seconds left in the first. After some minor adjustments, Roaring Fork forced Basalt to punt in its first series during the third quarter. From their 18, the Rams strung together a 13-play drive to distance themselves from their rival.
Trevor Hunt bullied his way from the 1-yard line to open a 13-6 lead. The defense’s time on the field was short-lived.”Interior-wise, we didn’t change much [defensively],” Brinson said. “We had a check against their twin set, and that shut it down.”During the second half, the Rams repeatedly did just that.
After Hunt’s score, Basalt went three-and-out again. Roaring Fork’s offense returned the favor by posting another touchdown – on a six-yard pass from Kade Giannetti to Jake Kinney midway through the fourth quarter.Giannetti, as a defensive back, scored the Rams’ last touchdown with a 33-yard interception return against Longhorns quarterback Tucker Hinchcliff.
