Puckers set to defend crown

Pucker up, Aspen.The Women’s Association of Colorado Hockey state championship tournament kicks off here today with the defending two-time state champion Mother Puckers looking for a three-peat.The Aspen-based Puckers are seeded second and will open their Stella Cup title defense against Vail at 7:45 p.m. Friday at the Ice Garden. The Puckers square off against the Denver Mavericks at 2 p.m. Saturday.Last year at the state tourney in Breckenridge, the Puckers overcame injuries and a tough draw to play the Mavericks in the title game and win, 5-2. Aspen’s B team begins play at Lewis Ice Arena at the Aspen Recreation Center at 4:45 p.m. today. There are eight teams in the A division and seven in B. A new Denver-based team earned the tournament’s top seed.The title games for both division are Sunday.
