The Aspen High School spirit team collected a second-place finish at the annual Colorado High School Spirit Competition at the Denver Coliseum.

The Skiers finished second to Bennett in the Class 3A poms division in the event sponsored by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

They were just three points out of first place in the statewide competition last weekend.

“This team was committed,” said AHS spirit/dance coach Eileen Knapp. “They really worked hard for this.”

Knapp said that the seven-member squad that competed at the Denver Coliseum did not miss a single practice in the months leading up to the competition.

“Every single one of them came to practice very day,” Knapp said.

She said the team had a difficult schedule at the state championship.

They had to compete in the preliminary round of the poms at 7 a.m.

The Skiers qualified for the finals, and their final competition was at 7 that night.

The finals, Knapp said, were judged on showmanship and facial expression.

“They all did a great job,” she said of the team of six girls and one boy.

The Aspen High School state squad included Maria Budsey, Taylor Reed, Luke Ryan, Nikki Blizzard, Reiss Rosier, Johana Canas and Paxton Seward. Blizzard and Rosier were the captains of the state squad.

The team is coached by Knapp, Hannah Gregory and Candace Sipsey.

“They did a good job representing their school at state,” Knapp said. The Skiers also endured a midseason coaching change but still managed their best state finish in nearly a decade.

Bennett won the Class 3A poms division with 87.025 points.

Aspen was second at 83.975.

Third place went to Bayfield with Lutheran fourth and Sheridan fifth.

Conifer finished sixth.

Grand Valley finished seventh.

The Basalt squad was eighth at state in poms.

In the Class 3A cheer division at state, Greeley University High School finished first.

Coal Ridge from New Castle was second. Platte Valley finished third.
