Aspen golf takes fifth at state tournament

The second and final day of the Class 3A state tournament wasn’t nearly as kind as the first for the Aspen High School boys golf team. The Skiers entered the day in third after shooting a first-day score of 234, but settled for a fifth-place finish with a second-day score of 244 to shoot 478 for the tournament, held at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora.

Kent Denver shot 445 to win the 3A state championship, followed by Peak to Peak (448), Dawson (471) and Eaton (475). Basalt shot 493 to finish eighth overall.

“It was a really tough day for everyone on our team out there today. We had some really tough times,” Aspen coach Mary Woulfe said. “It’s a young team and they are learning. We had one good day and one not so good day at the tournament. We need to put two together. That’s kind of the story.”

Aspen’s top finisher was freshman Jack Pevny, who shot 160 (79-81) over the two rounds to finish tied for 20th. Sophomore Dominic Lanese tied for 22nd after shooting 161 (81-80). Sophomores Dawson Holmes (79-83) and Jack Hughes (76-86) each shot 162 to tie for 25th.
