Playoffs ahead for area prep teams

Staff report

The regular seasons are winding down for area high school athletes.

Spring sports are concluding with playoffs on the horizon for several local teams.

The Aspen High School boys lacrosse team will advance to the Class 4A state playoffs after a perfect run through the Mountain League and the conference championship.

The Skiers traveled to the Front Range on Saturday where they lost a 9-3 decision to the No. 2-ranked and perennial powerhouse Air Academy.

Aspen was ranked No. 4 entering the game, according to The Denvr Post.

Both Air Academy and Aspen will host first-round playoff games next week.

The seedings for the boys lacrosse playoffs will be announced Monday, according to the Colorado High School Activities Association.

The Basalt High School baseball team also will be charging into the Class 3A state playoffs after clinching the Western Slope League title earlier this week.

The Longhorns, with the league title already secured, hosted Olathe in a league doubleheader Saturday.

The Longhorns, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by MaxPreps, won the first game, 11-9. Basalt dropped the second game, 6-1.

The Longhorns are 15-2 overall, 14-1 in conference.

Additional details on Saturday’s game were not available as of press time.

Full results of the Tiger Invitational also were not available Saturday night.

Area track and field athletes will compete in conference championship meets next weekend in Grand Junction.
