Olenicks go big at California contests

Like brother, like sister.

A week after his younger sister, Megan, won a slopestyle final at California’s Big Bear Resort, Carbondale freeskier Peter Olenick earned the “Monster Hit” title at a superpipe contest Sunday in Sun Valley, Calif.

Both events are part of the Paul Mitchell Opens Freeski Tour.

Megan Olenick bested four other skiers in the slopestyle final at the Big Bear Open ” the second stop on the Paul Mitchell tour. Kristi Johns took the silver and Vail’s Claudia Bouvier won the bronze.

Sunday, in Sun Valley, Peter Olenick fin­ished fourth in the overall halfpipe contest ” but took top honors for the best individ­ual trick for his trademark whiskey flip (double backflip).

Colby West of Canterbury, N. H., took the gold in the halfpipe contest, followed by J. P. Solberg (Waterville Valley, N. H.) and Simon Dumont (Bethel, Maine). Solberg also took the silver in the ” Mon­ster Hit” contest, followed by Dumont and West.

For his win, West also earned the series’ overall title.

The Sun Valley contests will be televised March 29 and 30 on CBS.
