McBride promoted to head coach of U.S. men’s speed team

The U.S. Ski Team promoted Aspen resident John McBride to head coach of the men’s downhill and super G team on Wednesday.

Newly named U.S. men’s alpine head coach Phil McNichol promoted McBride along with another longtime U.S. Ski Team assistant coach, Martin Anderson.

McBride replaces Dale Stephens, who resigned after four years as men’s speed coach, while Andersen succeeds Jesse Hunt, who recently was named U.S. alpine director with responsibilities over both men’s and women’s teams, as the head men’s slalom and giant slalom coach.

“I’ve coached with John-o [McBride] since we were both club coaches, and I’ve got the greatest confidence in his ability to not only coach and communicate. but to create the kind of environment that allows for success,” McNichol said. “And I’ve watched Martin working so well with Jesse as the tech team has emerged in the last couple of seasons to have its best success in nearly 20 years; he’s the obvious coach to follow Jesse and maintain the consistency of that program.”

After growing up in Aspen, McBride raced for the University of Vermont where he also roomed with Hunt. He coached at the Aspen Valley Ski Club from 1988 until joining the U.S. Ski Team coaching staff for the 1997 season as a Europa Cup slalom and giant slalom coach. He also coached World Cup downhill and super G in 1998 before being named men’s Europa Cup downhill and super G head coach for the 1999 season. McBride then returned to the World Cup downhill and super G staff last season.
