SAN SICARIO, Italy ” Austrian Renate Goetschl won a super-G race Friday, and American Julia Mancuso came in eighth to end her streak of five straight top-three finishes.
Lindsey Kildow of the United States, who crashed in the downhill training session at the same course at the Turin Olympics, was runner-up by 0.09 seconds.
“I don’t know how to be that much faster. I tucked my heart out,” Mancuso said.
Goetschl completed the run in 1 minute, 24.90 seconds for her fifth win this season and 43rd World Cup title. Kildow was faster than Goetschl at the first two checkpoints, but lost speed on the bottom section of the course.
“It just gives me confidence that I could have done it, and today I did,” Kildow said of her return to the course. “I wanted to prove something to myself on this hill.”
Christine Sponring of Austria was third for only the second top-three finish of her career.
Mancuso still picked up points on the two women ahead of her ” Austria’s Marlies Schild and Nicole Hosp ” in the overall World Cup standings.
Goetschl considered retirement after injuries and surgery sidelined her near the end of last season. She’s glad she returned.
“I’m having a lot of fun right now,” Goetschl said. “It’s not easy to win on this hill because it’s not very difficult. It’s always interesting though, you never know what’s going to happen.”
The Fraiteve Olympique course is wider than most speed courses and contains fewer turns. Because it is so straightforward, the margin of victory is usually small.
“You really have to have fast skis here and not make any mistakes,” Goetschl said. “You have to find a really straight line.”
Hosp finished 11th and Schild was 18th on Friday.
Schild leads the overall standings with 894 points, Hosp is second with 852 and Mancuso is third with 826. Goetschl is fourth with 821 points.
Hosp said she will skip Saturday’s downhill to rest. Mancuso was looking forward to the next race.
“I think the downhill is better for me here because there is a little more speed,” Mancuso said.
Goetschl has won three of the four super-Gs this season and holds a 140-point lead in the discipline standings over Hosp with three super-Gs remaining.
Goetschl also improved her third-place standing on the career victories list. She trails only Annemarie Moser-Proell (62 wins) and Vreni Schneider (55).
Friday’s race was moved from Altenmarkt because of poor weather in the Austrian resort earlier this month. A downhill is scheduled for Saturday, followed by another super-G on Sunday.
This wasn’t my best work. I still stand by my original picks to win each of the snowboard contests at X Games Aspen 2023, but fate chose poorly. The main lesson? Don’t pick against Mark McMorris, Marcus Kleveland or Scotty James, unless you have a very good reason.
