Locals on World Championships squad
Aspen, CO Colorado
PARK CITY, Utah ” Aspen Olympic medalists Gretchen Bleiler and Chris Klug are among 27 riders picked to compete for the United States at the 2007 FIS Snowboard World Championships in Arosa, Switzerland, Jan. 14-20.
Basalt resident Jason Smith, who competed in the inaugural Olympic boardercross last February, was also selected. Reigning world champions and Olympic boardercross medalists Seth Wescott (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) and Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, Vt.) are the two other Olympic medalists on the team.
“We have a super-strong team for worlds in every event, including defending world champions in boardercross,” said U.S. Snowboarding program director Jeremy Forster in a news release. “Plus we’ve got a lot of young riders on this team … All of them could crack the podium, so we’re looking for good things to happen in Arosa.”
The Americans collected four medals at the 2005 worlds, where Wescott and Jacobellis swept boardercross gold and Jayson Hale (Sierraville, Calif.) took bronze. Also landing on the podium in Whistler was 2006 Olympic gold medalist Hannah Teter (Belmont, Vt.) with a bronze in halfpipe.
