Local spikers perfect so far
Aspen, CO ColoradoThe local high school volleyball players who make up the U18 Defiance club team were perfect hosts this weekend in Basalt and Glenwood Springs.Perfect, as in a flawless 8-0 in matches at their home tournament, which featured a field of 24 teams.Squads from as far away as Colorado Springs made the trip to kick off the club season, which runs through April. The best teams in the state will qualify for the Junior Olympics, slated for June.The Defiance beat Rockside 18 Volleyball Club in two games Saturday (25-23, 25-19) to win its pool, before taking on Grand Junction’s U18 team in the finals. Strong hitting from Roaring Fork’s Erica Pelland and Battle Mountain Sarah Simmons helped the Defiance down Grand Junction in two straight games (25-19, 25-14). Pelland was a first-team 3A Western Slope selection this fall for the Rams and Pelland won a 4A state title with the Huskies, who never lost a match all season.Basalt middle blocker Dayne Toney and Aspen’s Kyla Walter were also pivotal in the win. Toney, another 3A Western Slope first-team selection, will be back for her senior season next fall, while Walter is set to play at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.
The dance team traveled this past weekend to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, for the high school national championships, winning the intermediate varsity pom division on Sunday.
