Lineup set for double pipe

The stars are lining up for the Red Bull Double Pipe Contest, scheduled for March 11-13 at Buttermilk.

Red Bull officials this week released a preliminary list of snowboarding stars scheduled to compete on the customized double pipe/slopestyle course in Aspen.

This year, the updated course design will feature the massive side-by-side superpipes.

But this year the course also will include slopestyle features that will make the Red Bull Double Pipe one of the largest single snow features ever built for a competition or demonstration.

The headline names for the invitation-only event, part of the Red Bull Signature Series, will include Olympians and Winter X Games stars like Danny Davis, Stale Sandbech, Louie Vito, Ben Ferguson, Ayuma Hirano, Scotty James and Arthur Longo.

As well, defending champion Taylor Gold will be back after capturing the first Red Bull Double Pipe event at Buttermilk last year, with heavy snow falling for much of that contest.

“I had a blast at last year’s event, it was super fun,” Gold said. “I’m really stoked to check out the changes to this year’s course. I think we learned a lot from last year, and this year the new features will make the riding even more insane. Can’t wait.”

Also this year, additional divisions were added to the competition.

They include best trick, riders’ choice award and a unique doubles competition.

Events will start at noon on Wednesday, March 11, at the Winter X Games venue at Buttermilk.

Finals will be staged from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, March 12.

A doubles jam session is set for Friday, March 13.

The riders’ choice award will be determined by the athletes. Their winner will receive a new 2015 Polaris snowmobile.

The event also will be shown via livestream on redbull.tv with programs set for March 12 and March 14.
