Leafs U20 hockey team pulls surprising sweep of Pikes Peak
The Aspen Leafs U20 hockey team won its ninth straight game Saturday, defeating the Pikes Peak Miners, 6-3, at Lewis Ice Arena.
The win gave Aspen a two-game weekend sweep of Pikes Peak, which is comfortably in first place in the five-team Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League. The Leafs also won, 7-2, on Friday.
In Saturday’s game, Aspen led 1-0 after a quick goal from Brett Hawkins, but the Miners tied the game only minutes later to send the teams to the second period at a goal each. The Leafs then unloaded in the second period, scoring three straight goals — one each from Hunter Havice, Charlie Van Allen and Alec Johnson — to take a 4-1 lead. Pikes Peak got two of them back before the period ended, however, cutting it to 4-3.
Aspen put the game away in the final period, scoring two more goals — one each from Jarrett McDonald and Viacheslev Goev — to complete the sweep.
The Leafs have only two more games remaining in the regular season, both against the last-place Colorado Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday at Lewis Ice Arena. Aspen has 52 points and is trying to chase down second-place Steamboat, which has 56 points and played its final regular-season game Saturday. Pikes Peak leads with 60 points, and will wrap up its regular season Friday and Saturday with games against the fourth-place Colorado Rampage.
