Leafs blow out first-place Miners on Friday

The Aspen Leafs U20 hockey team pulled a surprising upset of Pikes Peak on Friday, winning 7-2 at Lewis Ice Arena.

Pikes Peak (30-7) sits comfortably in first place in the five-team Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League with the playoffs only a few weeks away. The Miners’ 60 points leads Steamboat’s 51 points and Aspen’s 50 points.

Friday’s win for the Leafs was their second straight over the Miners, the last coming 4-2 on Jan. 15, after losing the first seven contests of the season against them. Aspen (23-13-1) led 2-0 after a period and 4-0 after two periods. Jarrett McDonald had two goals and one assist to lead the Leafs. Alec Johnson, Viacheslev Goev, Connor Moore and Charlie Van Allen each had a goal apiece.



Jimmy Grosklaus recored 26 saves in net.

The two teams will play again at 7 p.m. Saturday in Aspen. The Leafs then finish out their regular season March 10-11 with two home games against the Colorado Thunderbirds.
