Lady Rams fall to Lions
FORT COLLINS – A fast start and a valiant third-quarter comeback attempt for the Roaring Fork girls weren’t enough to overcome yet another 30-plus point output from one of the state’s top Class 3A scorers. The Rams opened a 13-6 lead in the first three minutes of their loser-out 3A State Basketball Tournament consolation semifinal game at Moby Arena against Colorado Springs Christian Friday afternoon. But Lions’ senior Megann Alberts turned it on en route to a game-high 33 points, leading her team to a 70-60 win.Roaring Fork finished the season with a 21-4 record. The loss for the No. 2 seed Rams came on the heels of a 45-40 quarterfinal loss to top seed Estes Park Thursday night. In that game, this season’s 3A “Miss Basketball,” Dawn Shockley, poured in 35 points.Alberts ranked second only to Shockley in scoring among 3A players this season. “We’ve gotta quit giving kids 33 and 35 points,” first-year Roaring Fork coach Kirk Cheney said.”We came out to a great start, but that second quarter killed us,” he said of a 23-11 run by the Lions after they stormed back to tie it 18-all at the end of the first.”I’m proud of these kids, though. They left it out on the floor today,” Cheney said. “We’ll be back next year.”The Rams converted back-to-back steals into a bucket by junior Sarah Armstrong and a three-pointer by junior Whitney Campbell to go up 11-4 at the 5:12 mark in the first quarter. Following a timeout, the Lady Lions’ started a run that saw the Roaring Fork lead evaporate in a hurry.Aggressive defense gave the Rams a chance at the start of the second half, as Roaring Fork pulled to within five points, 43-38, midway through the third quarter, and again, 48-43, in the closing seconds of the frame.C-Springs, behind the hot hands of Alberts and sophomore guard Steph Friesen, who drained four second-half treys, regained command to go back up 57-46 with 6:12 to play.Junior Whitney Campbell led Roaring Fork with 17 points, while senior Carly Velasquez added 12 points and seven rebounds. Friesen was the only other C-Springs player in double figures with 17 points.
