Lady Longhorns volleyball hopes to travel well in Aspen

The Lady Longhorns volleyball team plays well when they travel, winning their first two matches on the road. Tonight, they hope to continue that streak when they visit Aspen.

Basalt (2-0) has not lost a game of match play, defeating Rangely 2-0 and Paonia 3-0.

Aspen was shut out by Glenwood Springs in their season-opener, but returned strong against Grand Valley, winning 3-1.

While it’s a big rivalry, Aspen coach Matt Bergdahl said he’ll just try to keep his girls focused.

“It’s a league match; it’s important for us to get off to a good start,” Bergdahl said.

He said he hasn’t had a chance to see Basalt play, but he knows they are young and similar to Aspen.

“At this point, it’s anybody’s match,” Bergdahl said.

While Bergdahl mentioned that seniors Lindsay Patterson and Katy Cadger were among the leaders of the team, he said everybody is a contributor.

“We’re more of a balanced team rather than individual stars,” he said.

In the Grand Valley Tournament last month, Aspen finished 2-2, tied for third.

“Those were our first matches out of the gate,” Bergdahl said. “We’re a young team; we’ve got some way to go. We’re learning quickly. Our goal is to peak at the end of the season.”

Aspen hosts Basalt in the new AHS gym at 6 p.m. Freshmen and JV matches will precede the main event.
