Lady ‘Horns bounce back
After having its 13-game winning streak snapped and suffering its first loss in over two months on Saturday, the Basalt High School girls basketball team had little trouble bouncing back Tuesday night.
The Longhorns used a dominating third quarter to pull away from Eagle Valley and keep itself atop the Class 3A Western Slope League standings with a 65-51 victory at Basalt High School.
With starter Rochelle Moebius sidelined due to a concussion suffered in Saturday’s loss to Cedaredge, seniors Lauren Redfern and Brittney Pollock picked up the slack. Redfern paced Basalt with 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Pollock was on fire from outside with four 3-pointers and 18 points.
The Lady Longhorns (11-1 league, 14-3 overall) have just two league games left and have guaranteed themselves a league finish of no lower than third place. It’s a fourth consecutive league title Basalt is after, however, and that probably won’t be decided until the Longhorns face Roaring Fork (10-1, 15-1) in the season finale Feb. 20. Cedaredge (8-3, 12-4) is currently third and Eagle Valley (6-6, 9-8) sits fourth.
Basalt has the weekend off before facing Hotchkiss (3-8, 7-9) in a league contest Tuesday.

A local kid got on the X Games Aspen podium on Sunday night, but it wasn’t the one most people expected. Even Jon Sallinen didn’t think he’d be taking home a medal.
