Just because it’s the day your super-inspirado autobiography drops doesn’t mean you get to lounge around and bask in the adoration. Such was the case yesterday at Copper Mountain for 2002 Olympic bronze medalist Chris Klug of Aspen. Especially not when you’ve revealed in said autobiography, titled “To the Edge and Back: My Story from Organ Transplant Survivor to Olympic Snowboarder,” that you essentially stole and then wrecked your head coach’s handmade race board (but fellow competitor back then). Not when you are Klug, a self-proclaimed achievement junkie, and there are gates to be chased and races to be won.Klug won the parallel giant slalom (PGS) Continental Cup competition under bluebird skies Monday at Copper, edging Eric Warren of Bennington, Vt., for top honors. Tyler Jewell of Sudbury, Mass., was third for the men.A shortage of course slippers led to some rough conditions in the finals, but no worries – these riders are professionals and they can hang. The women’s final found U.S. Snowboarding’s own Michelle Gorgone of Sudbury, Mass., and Lisa Kosglow of Boulder in a hard fought battle to the end. Multiple synchronized crashes in the final kept the action exciting, with Gorgone finally taking top honors. If the thought of hard boots and speed suits keeps you up at night, there is more hot racing action to be had at Copper today.
