Kaukoniemi leads slalom qualifying

ARE, Sweden ” Tuukka Kaukoniemi of Finland posted the fastest time in slalom qualifying Thursday at the world championships.
Kaukoniemi, who had a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 57.14 seconds, has failed to finish the first run in all five of his World Cup races this season.
Natko Zrncic-Dim of Croatia was second, 1.02 seconds behind, and Anton Konovalov of Russia was third, 1.42 back.
Krystof Kryzl of the Czech Republic was fourth and Tim Jitloff of the United States was fifth. Jitloff is the fourth member of the U.S. slalom quad, after Bode Miller, Ted Ligety and Jimmy Cochran.
In his world championship debut, Jitloff placed 18th in the giant slalom Tuesday.
It was the first time slalom competitors needed to go through a qualifying phase at the world championships.
The slalom race is scheduled for Saturday.

World Cup downhill racing returning to Aspen Mountain in March 2023
U.S. Ski & Snowboard on Tuesday made the official announcement that World Cup Alpine skiing is returning to Aspen Mountain in March with men’s super-G and downhill racing, part of a revamped schedule by the International Ski Federation for the 2022-23 season.
