Rugby will hit the stage this weekend when the Junior Gents host a Saturday game at Willits Field in Basalt.

The Junior Gents, affiliated with the Gentlemen of Aspen rugby club, will host the Palmer Terrors from Colorado Springs in a 2 p.m. kickoff for the high school rugby game.

The team is coached by rugby veteran Gary Williams.

The 2015 squad, he said, features Christian Gonzalez of Glenwood Springs, who is coming off a third-place finish in the recent Colorado High School State Wrestling Championships.

“He’s proving to be one of the best props in the state,” Williams said. “He’s not only strong in the field of play and the scrums, but he’s also scored four tries in three games.”

Williams said the squad is looking forward to Saturday’s home match after a road trip to Aurora last weekend for a game against Ridgeview Academy.

The Junior Gents were missing four starters on the road but managed a 12-0 halftime lead behind Gonzalez and his mates.

Keenan McIntyre ran hard to set up the second score by center Danny Gomez, Williams said.

After Ridgeview cut the lead in the second half, the Junior Gents, led by backs Matt Wampler and Jake Gentry, rolled to tries from Eric Mesa, Gentry, Michael Rivera and Gomez.

“Robert Hiles enjoyed an industrious game and finished with four conversions and eight points,” Williams said.

The public is invited to Saturday’s game at Willits Field.
