The Junior Gents, the Roaring Fork Valley’s high school rugby team, rolled to another big victory last weekend on the home grounds at Willits Field in Basalt.
The game started with Robert Hiles of the Junior Gents setting the tone when he reclaimed the opening kickoff from teammate Matt Williams.
Hiles, in his first season of rugby, helped the Junior Gents dominate in the lineouts. The Glenwood Springs High School student also carried the ball on every offensive attack.
A stalwart on defense, he also kicked eight of nine conversions — from all over the field.
Jake Gentry split the opposition early and often with penetrating runs. He scored in the first half along with Williams, Dardynski and Prosence.
The Junior Gents led 28-0 at halftime.
Williams finished with another hat trick of tries.
The Junior Gents also enjoyed contributions from Wampler, Rivera, Meza and Olmero Martinez.
The Junior Gents are a mix of football players, basketball players, skiers, wrestlers. etc., from the Roaring Fork Valley. They are coached by Gary Williams, the man who coached the senior Gentlemen of Aspen to their first national rugby titles in the mid-1990s.
The team is the defending state champion in Division 2 prep rugby.
The Junior Gents will open the state playoffs this weekend in Denver.
