The Junior Gentlemen will kick off a new rugby season this weekend.

The high school-age team of the Gentlemen of Aspen rugby club will travel to Monte Vista to take on a new rugby team from the San Luis Valley area.

Coach Cameron McIntyre, who also leads the senior Gents of Aspen team, said the opener will launch a nine-game regular season for the prep rugby players.

“We’re on the road for the first three games,” said McIntyre, who helped coach the Gentlemen of Aspen to the 2015 Ruggerfest title last fall. “And we have four games at home.”

The Junior Gents include players from Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. The squad also is open to interested players from Coal Ridge, Rifle and beyond.

He said the team is excited to welcome a new club.

The Junior Gents last weekend traveled to Breckenridge to scrimmage a fledgling junior squad from Summit County.

“The kids had a great day … very productive,” McIntyre said. “We had five to six rooies, and they all conducted themselves well.”

He said the teams played a 10-on-10 format with coaches working with the players on the field.

“We’re happy to support these new clubs,” said McIntyre.

The Junior Gents practice at Willits Field in Basalt, where they will play most of their home games.
