ARE, Sweden ” Manfred Moelgg finished third in the last slalom race to give Italy a narrow victory over Austria in the mixed team event at the World Cup finals on Sunday.

Moelgg, the last starter in the final heat, needed to finish no lower than fourth to secure victory for his team. He crossed the line 0.94 seconds behind winner Marcel Hirscher, but it was enough.

Italy finished with 21 points. Austria also had 21, but Italy won the tiebreaker by winning three of the heats while Austria won two.

Switzerland was third with 23 points, followed by Sweden with 26 and France with 29.

The competition, held at the Olympia course, consisted of a super G and slalom.

The United States, with two-time women’s overall champion Lindsey Vonn, did not compete. Norway, with men’s overall champion Aksel Lund Svindal, also missed the event because it didn’t have enough qualified skiers at the finals.

Also skiing for Italy were Nadia Fanchini, Nicole Gius, Daniela Merighetti, Peter Fill and Werner Heel.

Austria won the overall nations cup ahead of Switzerland, Italy, France, United States and Sweden.

French veteran Joel Chenal, wearing a red scarf, skied his last major race. Afterward, his was carried on his teammates’ shoulders around the finishing area.
