BASALT ” Ho hum.

Basalt’s spikers picked up another sweep Saturday to improve to 11-0. This one was over Hotchkiss, which pushed Basalt in the second game, but ultimately folded, losing 25-23.

The sweep (25-19, 25-23, 25-17) was the fifth in a row for Basalt, and its seventh this season.

Surprisingly, the Longhorns themselves are unimpressed with their impressive run.

“We’re definitely not where we need to be,” said senior Alia Munger, who served up five aces in the three-game win. “We’re taking more time than we should against teams, and we’re just kind of moving along at a steady pace. We need to bring it up.”

“We need to be more confident,” said senior outside hitter Kat Fitzpatrick. “Not giving up five points, then giving up five points. We just need to take teams without stopping.”

Fitzpatrick had seven kills Saturday, second only to Basalt senior middle Dayne Toney who romped at the front of the net as usual, finishing with 13 kills. Toney also added nine digs.

Junior Heather Nemiec had three digs and served up six points for Basalt, including one ace. Sophomore Kehau Vegas had 23 assists and one kill.

Basalt finishes up its first run through the 3A Western Slope when it hosts Olathe ” currently second in the league standings ” at 6 p.m. Thursday.

“We’re definitely getting better every week, which is good,” Munger said. “We need to work on communication and just little errors. They got a lot of points off our mistakes.”
