‘Horns soccer packs house on all-league team

Basalt sophomore Katie Staerkel was named the Class 3A Western Slope League Player of the Year, and seven other Basalt High girls soccer players, as well as their head coach, helped fill out the all-star team roster.

Staerkel, who led all of Colorado’s Class 3A in scoring during the regular season with 30 goals and 11 assists, is joined by teammates Sofie Stenstadvold, a senior, junior Maddie Hoffman, freshman Jessi Graf and sophomore Emily Birk on the first team all-league roster.Seniors Deanna Spracher and Kari Heuer, and sophomore Bailey Holmes, recieved honorable mention accolades. Chris Woods, the second-year head coach of Basalt, who was the BHS junior varsity coach for three years prior, was named the 3A WSL’s Coach of the Year.

Basalt, the reigning eight-time 3A WSL league champions, lost in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state tournament to Denver Christian last week. Last night, Denver Christian, the reigning state champions and No. 12 seed in this year’s tourney, lost to No. 2 Faith Christian 2-0 in the state final in Golden.

Aspen, the No. 2 team in the final 3A WSL standings, landed five players on the all-league team, including first-teamers Emily Hassall, Elyse Boelens and Haley Ortmann. Julia Hassall and Maria Peissis earned honorable mention honors.Other local honorees included Roaring Fork’s Taylor Wagner, Megan Zeigel and Whitney Campbell, and CRMS’ Beda Calhoon and Kirsten Cushman.
