‘Horns shut out RFHS

Basalt’s Shannon Hutton summarized Tuesday’s Basalt-Roaring Fork girls soccer game in seven words.

“We are such a second-half team,” the Longhorn senior said as she watched the final moments of Basalt’s 5-0 road victory from the bench after the ‘Horns broke the game open with four second-half goals.

Basalt coach Chris Woods might not like the idea of watching 40 minutes of play before seeing his team’s offense produce. But, at least he’s getting used to seeing the Longhorns explode.

“We just seem to pick it up in the second half,” said Woods. “We refocused on our first touches, got better composure and the goals just seemed to come.”

The Lady ‘Horns have dealt shutouts the last four games, winning by a combined tally of 22-0.

All four of Basalt’s second-half goals came in a bunch.

Sophomore Maddie Hoffman, who scored the first half’s only goal on a penalty kick, zipped in a shot to the far post from the left wing in the 47th minute.

Over the next 14 minutes of play, the Longhorns scored three more times.

Forward Ukare Sano netted both of her goals in less than three minutes.

In the 51st minute, Sano beat Roaring Fork goalie Whitney Campbell to the right post for a 3-0 Longhorn lead. Her second goal came off a penalty kick in the 53rd minute.

Then Basalt senior Ashley Eaton, who assisted on Sano’s first goal, concluded the scoring by poking a shot home with 16 minutes remaining.

Offensively, the shot count was equally lopsided. Basalt peppered the Rams’ net with 25 shots. Meanwhile, Roaring Fork mustered only three shots on goal – all in the first half.

With the victory, the Class 3A Western Slope League-leading Longhorns (7-0-0) have a two-game lead over the second-place Rams (4-2-0).

Woods, however, is reserved about claiming the WSL title just yet.

“Its not over until we play the last league game,” he said. “But, we’re on a roll right now and we want to keep this going.”

The Basalt girls play at Aspen on Thursday at 4 p.m.
