ASPEN – The Aspen High School Skiers boys basketball team took one more step toward claiming its third consecutive league championship with a hard-fought 62-49 win over No. 2-ranked Moffat County High School on Tuesday night before a raucous crowd.

A championship atmosphere in Aspen propelled and inspired a stifling Skiers defense, according to coach Steve Ketchum. Aspen’s Trent Lichtenwalter held Moffat’s big man in the middle to a scoreless effort, while Dan Schwartz locked up the league’s leading scorer, Tyler Davis, by containing him to a season-low two points. Clayton Crawford limited the Bulldogs’ best all-around player to a season-low two points.

Aspen led 14-8 after one quarter and held a 27-18 advantage at the half. The lead was extended to 16 points after three quarters, and Aspen’s free-throw shooting down the stretch helped secure the Skiers’ ninth straight win.

Crawford and Lichtenwalter led all scorers with 18 points each, followed by three players with eight points each – Schwartz, Evan Patzoldt and Luke Rider. Aspen was 20-of-28 from the charity stripe, while Moffat County was only seven-of-14.

If Moffat County defeats Roaring Fork at home Friday and Aspen continues to win, there will be a three-way tie for the league championship.
