Hockey: Leafs start season with pair of wins
The Aspen Leafs U20 hockey team began its season where it left off.
The defending Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League champions opened its fall schedule Friday with a 7-2 win over the Colorado Rampage in Monument. Seven different players scored for the Leafs, three coming on power plays.
The teams met again Saturday, where Aspen led 4-1 entering the third period. The Rampage rallied to tie the game at 4-4 with six minutes to play, however, before Aspen’s Nolan Willoughby scored his second goal of the young season with only three seconds to play to give the Leafs the 5-4 win.
Next for the Leafs is a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Pikes Peak Miners in Colorado Springs.
