Hockey: Doremus’ hat trick not enough as Aspen falls, 7-3

ASPEN – The offense of Fountain Valley proved to be too much, and Aspen fell, 7-3, at Lewis Ice Arena on Friday night in a non-conference match.

The Skiers (5-4) went down early in the opening minutes of the game, but Jack Doremus evened the score with his first of three goals of the night.

However, the Danes (7-2) put two more goals on the board quickly afterward, and then Doremus found the net again. Fountain Valley led 3-2 after the first period.

“They have some talented players on that team,” Aspen head coach Al Butler said. “One guy had 17 goals going in to tonight. Another had 12. Obviously, they have firepower. They have skills, and when you make mistakes, they make you pay for it.”

It was all Fountain Valley in the second as the visitors added another goal, and the Skiers couldn’t respond.

In the final period, Doremus completed the hat trick to bring Aspen to within one, but the Danes’ offense erupted for three goals to close out the night.

“They had finals all week, and I don’t want to use that as an excuse, but they seemed mentally tired in the beginning of the game,” Butler said about his team. “There were mental breakdowns early on, and (Fountain Valley) capitalized. We could never really get where we needed to be.”

The Skiers were outshot 39-23 as Butler said the Danes let loose shots seemingly at will.

Aspen next travels to Monarch Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
