Hockey: Aspen suffers third one-point loss

While head coach Al Butler said his Aspen hockey team played its best game all season, the effort wasn’t enough against Monarch.

The Skiers lost 3-2 on the road Saturday evening against one of the top teams in the Foothills League. The Coyotes (11-1, 7-1) edged Aspen with two straight goals in the second period.

“The fact that they played their hearts out, even though this is a loss, they didn’t give up any of their shifts,” Butler said. “These guys have to feel good. They proved they could compete with one of the top teams in the league.”

Monarch struck first on a power play in the first period, but the Skiers evened the score shortly after.

In the second, however, it was all Coyotes with two goals scored to put Aspen in a 3-1 hole.

Gus Gregory pulled the Skiers within one in the third, but Aspen couldn’t find the net again to drop to 5-5 on the season and 2-3 in league play. The Skiers were outshot 30-27.

“We dominated the end of the third in their end,” Butler said. “They stepped up and played in their positions, which is something they didn’t do (Friday) night.”

Aspen next travels to Battle Mountain on Monday.
