High school XC teams to host annual fundraiser races Aug. 18 and 19
Both local high school cross country teams are set to host their annual fundraisers this weekend with the Basalt Half Marathon and the Aspen Mountain hill climb.
On Saturday, Aug. 18, Basalt High School will host the 42nd annual Basalt Half Marathon, which begins near Ruedi Reservoir and ends at Lions Park in downtown Basalt. The mostly paved 13-mile route descends roughly 1,000 feet along the Frying Pan Road to the finish.
A downloadable entry form can be found at http://www.basalthalfmarathon.com. Otherwise, day-of registration will be held from 6:15 to 7 a.m. at Lions Park. Pre-registration cost is $75, with it going to $80 the day of the race. The race itself starts at 7:45 a.m., with runners getting bussed to the start area. All proceeds benefit the BHS cross country program, which begins its season Aug. 25 with its home meet at Crown Mountain Park.
On Sunday, Aug. 19, it’s the Aspen High School cross country team’s turn to host the 24th annual Aspen Mountain Summer Uphill. Starting at the base of Ajax, competitors will follow the 4.5-mile course along Summer Road to the finish at the Sun Deck, more than 3,000-feet of climbing later.
Participants have the option of either running or mountain biking the course. Cost is $20 with pre-registration taking place at the Ute Mountaineer in Aspen until 5 p.m. Friday, with race-day registration taking place beginning at 7 a.m. at the base of the Silver Queen Gondola. The mountain bike race starts at 8 a.m. on Sunday, followed by the runners/hikers at 8:15 a.m.
Again, the race is a benefit for the AHS cross country team, which is scheduled to host its lone regular season home meet, the annual Chris Severy Memorial, on Saturday, Oct. 6.
