WHISTLER, B.C. – Simi Hamilton kicked things off for the valley’s Olympic contingent, skiing to a 64th-place finish in Monday’s 15-kilometer freestyle at Whistler Olympic Park.

The Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club alum, one of four U.S. skiers in the field, covered the course in 37 minutes, 30.5 seconds. Switzerland’s Dario Cologna (33:36.3) took the gold, while Italy’s Pietro Piller Cottrer (34:00.9) and Lukas Bauer (34:12) of the Czech Republic rounded out the podium. The field included 95 athletes.

“Pheww… got one under the belt, now it’s time to rip it in the sprint on Wednesday,” Hamilton wrote on Twitter on Monday afternoon. He did not return calls seeking comment.

It was a tough day for the Americans. Anchorage’s James Southam (35:58.2) finished 48th, Minneapolis’ Garrott Kuzzy (36:41.5) 58th and Kris Freeman (36:41.6) of Andover, N.H., 59th.

In earlier action Monday, Olympic rookie Caitlin Compton of Minneapolis paced the Americans with a 30th-place result in the women’s 10-kilometer freestyle.

Hamilton next competes in Wednesday’s individual sprint, the event he won at January’s U.S. nationals in Anchorage.

The 22-year-old was 27th in a 1.7-kilometer classic sprint qualifier at last week’s World Cup races in Canmore, Alberta.
