Girls basketball: Gunnison shuts down Aspen

Hunter Lucas led the way with a double-double, teammate Alex Lovato scored 15 points, and the Gunnison High School girls raced past Aspen 47-16 on Saturday at the AHS gymnasium.

Lucas, a 5-2 senior guard, scored 14 points and collected 12 rebounds as the Cowgirls spoiled the final home game of the season for the Aspen girls.

Ten different Gunnison player scored helping the Cowgirls improve to 6-7 in the Western Slope League. The Gunnison girls are 6-12 overall.



Jessica Coxon led Aspen with three points and six rebounds.

Teammate Fiona Lupi also scored three points against Gunnison.




Jess Furr, Megan Hanson, McKenna Woodrow, Marissa Buchholz and Cliara Sanchez also scored for the Skiers in the final home game.

Aspen is 1-16 overall, 1-11 in conference.

Gunnison closed the first quarter with a 14-2 run to take a 17-4 lead into the second period.

The Skiers bounced back with eight points in the second quarter.

But Gunnison’s pesky defense limited the Aspen girls to only four second-half points.

The trip to the Roaring Fork Valley was a sweep for the Gunnison girls, who won at Basalt 37-15 on Friday night.

The Aspen girls will close the regular season next week. The Skiers will play at Basalt on Thursday night before finishing the regular season at Moffat County next Saturday.
