Girls basketball: Coal Ridge shuts down Aspen

Santana Martinez scored 14 points to lead the Coal Ridge High School girls basketball team past Aspen 38-21 on Friday night.

The Titans, who improved to 3-2 in the Western Slope League and 4-6 overall, broke to a 10-5 lead in the first quarter with six points from Martinez.

The Coal Ridge defense took over in the second period, limiting the Aspen girls to just two points.

The Titans led 32-15 at halftime.

The Skiers ramped up their game in the second half and played evenly against the Titans.

Both teams scored 14 points in the second half.

Kashley Morgan scored seven for Coal Ridge. Teammate Alexis Holder added five.

Aspen was led by Cliara Sanchez.

She scored nine points and pulled down nine rebounds in Aspen’s loss.

Simone Lamont added four points for Aspen.

Julia Boronski, Claire Boronski and Liza Vecciarello also scored for the Skiers, who moved to 1-8 overall, 0-4 in conference play.

The Aspen girls will travel to Basalt for an afternoon game Saturday (2:30 p.m.)
