Freeride Series to give it another whirl at Snowmass
After back-to-back cancellations due to snow and poor visibility, the Powerade Colorado Freeride Series will try again this weekend at the Snowmass Ski Area.Weather permitting, officials hope to stage not one, but two series competitions, Saturday and Sunday. The events will run from about 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day.Next Friday, March 11, will serve as the third and final series event, as well as a qualifier for the one-day series championship on Saturday, March 12. Sunday, March 13, has been pegged as a weather day. This weekend, officials hope to put both Freeride Series venues into play – the Hanging Valley Wall area and the Burnside Cliffs area. However, on Thursday, officials were still waiting on weather forecasts before making any final decisions.”It could go either way at this point,” said Justin Erickson, event manager for the Aspen Skiing Co. “Whichever day looks like it’ll be more bluebird, we’ll go over to Burnside that day. But if the weather looks good both days, we’ll be in the Hanging Valley Wall on Saturday and the Burnside area on Sunday.”Aspen skier and former U.S. Extremes champion Aaron Estrada is expected to compete, along with Jamie Britt and Lindsey MacIntire in the women’s ski division, Erickson said. The field is limited to 100 skiers and/or riders for each event. Erickson said he thought both events would be close to filled by competition time.”It’s looking like a really large locals field,” he said. “I think word has gotten out in the valley that we’ve had to reschedule these two events, and people are throwing their hats in.”Registration costs $40 per series event or $100 for all three (not including the championship). Competitors may register online at http://www.aspensnowmass.com or by calling Erickson at 300-7031. An APRs party at the Blue Door will begin about 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.Tim Mutrie’s e-mail address is email@example.com
