Football: Horns fall to rivals

The Basalt Longhorns opened the home football season Friday night against a more than familiar opponent.
Valley rival Roaring Fork High School from Carbondale came to Basalt and went home with a hard-fought 13-0 victory over the Longhorns.
“The kids played a lot better this week, a lot better,” Basalt head coach Carl Frerichs said. “But penalties and turnovers just killed us.”
He said the Longhorns trailed only 7-0 at halftime.
“Then, they scored again in the third quarter,” Frerichs said, adding that the Longhorns overall were much improved from the zero week loss at Paonia last weekend.
“Matt Williams … he had a great game for us,” Frerichs said of the Basalt senior quarterback/linebacker. “He played his heart out. Felipe Martinez played his heart out.”
The Basalt coach also praised the play of Noah Schienberger in the home opener against the Class 1A Rams.
“We did play a lot better,” Frerichs said.
But, he said, giving up possessions with turnovers kept the Horns from the end zone.
The Longhorns (0-2) will have a bye week next week.
They will open Western League play Sept. 13 at defending conference champion Bayfield.
The Basalt football team will host Pagosa Springs on Sept. 20. Roaring Fork will return to Carbondale to host Aspen next Friday night. Aspen opened the season with a 39-12 nonconferernce victory at Ignacio.
