It was dominance from the start for the Basalt High School football team Friday in a 49-0 win over visiting Steamboat Springs.

“Super-proud of the kids,” Basalt coach Carl Frerichs said. “Our offensive line dominated the game.”

In its Western Slope League opener — and first home game since Zero Week — Basalt led 14-0 after a quarter and 28-0 at halftime en route to the win. Alex Alberto got the Longhorns on the board early, and it was smooth sailing from there. Sophomore Jake Reardon had three touchdowns to lead the team.

“Defensively, really every kid that played defense flew around and did a lot of good stuff out there,” Frerichs said. “That whole second season, starting 1-0, it puts us in the right direction where we want to be.”

It was the first shutout of the season for the Longhorns. Basalt, now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, will host Aspen next week for homecoming.
