Football: Basalt falls to Moffat County

Moffat County bolted to a 31-0 halftime lead and rolled past Basalt 49-6 in high school football Friday night in Basalt.

The visiting Bulldogs jumped to a quick 13-0 lead in the first quarter. They expanded the lead and improved to 2-4 overall. The Bulldogs are 1-1 in the Western Slope North League.

Basalt moved to 2-4, 1-1 in conference.

“We just did not play well,” Basalt head coach Carl Frerichs said. “We were missing some players.”

He said the Longhorns had four turnovers in the first half — two interceptions and two fumbles.

“We had some injuries and that made us younger and younger,” Frerichs said.

“Offensively, we moved the ball pretty well,” he said, adding that turnovers and lack of depth proved costly.

The Longhorns were coming off a big 30-6 win over Coal Ridge last weekend.

“This was a tough loss, but we’re looking forward to playing Roaring Fork next week,” Frerichs said.

The Basalt High School football team will hit the road for a rivalry game at Roaring Fork in Carbondale next Friday night.

One week later, the Longhorns will play at Battle Mountain. They will close the regular season at home against rival Aspen.
