Football: Aspen opens season with loss at Middle Park

The Aspen High School football team opened its season with a 22-14 loss at Middle Park on Friday. Trailing 16-0 early in the half, the youthful Skiers regrouped enough to make a game out of it.

“We came out kind of on our heels, and being a young team we weren’t sure what the speed was going to be, what the physicality was going to be,” said first-year coach Karson Pike. “We started the second quarter and figured out we could do this.”

The Skiers made it 16-14 by halftime but couldn’t generate any more offense after the break. Regardless, Pike saw a lot of good things from a team with only two seniors on the roster.

“We had a lot of guys grow up right on the field,” Pike said. “We got a lot of great things looking forward. They don’t feel like the season is over. They are hungry. We got a lot of great things coming out of a tough loss on a long road trip.”

Aspen (0-1) will host Arvada on Friday in its home opener. Arvada did not play in Zero Week.
