Fall Face Off, part II, opens today in Aspen

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Aspen Junior Hockey Association’s 10th annual Fall Face Off Tournament expanded from two weekends to three this year, and the second weekend of action will play out at the Aspen Ice Garden and the Lewis Ice Arena at the ARC today through Sunday.

Last weekend, Aspen’s Midget Minor team captured the title with a 3-0 win over Arvada in the championship game of the 2003 Fall Face Off. The Face Off is typically the first live action of the season for the Aspen Junior Hockey squads.

This weekend, Aspen teams are playing in the Peewee A, Bantam B and Midget Major A divisions, along with a host of teams from around the state. Play runs throughout the day Friday and Saturday and culminates with the finals in each division on Sunday afternoon.

“We’ve got close to 36 teams coming this weekend,” said Bryan Ganz, the new executive director of Aspen Junior Hockey. “The only division we’re not fielding a team in is in the Squirt C’s, just due to numbers, but our Peewee As, Bantam B’s and Midget Major A’s will be representing us in the three other divisions.

“Last weekend, the Midget Minors were the only Aspen team to win, but we’re looking to improve on that this weekend.”

Next weekend, in part three of the Fall Face Off, girls teams take the ice with under-12, under-14 and under-19 divisions, along with the Mites, the youngest players.
